Viking Pays slot REVIEW
Viking Pays ReviewThis is the second game in Inspired’s series of slots with exactly the same math model, setup and features, and we’re moving from ancient egypt to board a viking ship this time. If you’ve already tried Egyptian Pays, you know pretty much what you’re in for with this game, as only the theme has been changed. Viking Pays also centers around the all-important Re-Life bonus round, and this is where you’ll most likely get any significant payouts. The base game holds a decent potential, but dead spins and minute wins abund in our experience at least.
To find out more about that, you can check out our 200 spins test session video further down in the review, but let’s cover the basics first. Unlike the first game in the series, the reels are only semi-transparent here, so it’s hard to see much of the background. Anyway, the game plays out on 5 reels, 3 rows and 243 ways to win. You can place bets between 20p and £20 per spin on both mobile, tablet and PC, and the game works fine on iPhone as well as Android units.
The base game offers little in terms of excitement here, but it comes with a regular wild symbol. It can take patience to wait for the bonus round to trigger, but when it happens you will be on the edge of your seat. This is due to the fact that you need to renew your small amount of lives all the time to keep going, so even small wins are of great significance in that regard. Wins also increase the progressive multiplier, and payouts up to 12,500x your stake is possible in this highly volatile reskin of Egyptian Pays.
What are the bonus features?
The base game doesn’t come with all that many features, and you really need the Re-Life Spins to get anywhere in this game. There is a viking warrior wild symbol that will step in for all regular symbols, and this can land on all reels except for reel 1. It cannot substitute for the bonus symbol however, and it does not pay anything on its own.
You also have a so-called Spin Chance feature here, and this allows you to use the rest of your bankroll if it has shrunken below your current bet level. You then get one final spin to use up the remaining sum, and see if you can get back in the saddle, so to speak.
Free spins in Viking Pays
The bonus round is called Re-Life Free Spins, and it’s really an all-important feature in Viking Pays slot. You trigger the feature by landing 3 or more bonus scatters anywhere on the screen at the same time. There is a progressive multiplier in play during the bonus round, and the number of triggering scatters determine where you start on the multiplier ladder:
3 scatters means you start with a 2x multiplier
4 scatters means you start with a 4x multiplier
5 scatters means you start with a 5x multiplier
There is a life-meter on the left-hand side, and you start out with a full set of 3 lives. Each losing spin removes one life from the meter, and each winning spins resets the meter to 3 again. On the right-hand side you’ll see the multiplier ladder that goes from 2x to 50x. There are 11 rungs on this ladder, and they are as follows: 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 7x, 10x, 15x, 20x, 25x, 30x and 50x.
You will climb one rung on the multiplier ladder for every win, and the multiplier value does not reset on losing spins. Whenever you have only 1 life left you will benefit from a Life Saver Spin. This means that a fully stacked viking berserker wild will land on reel 3 (i.e. the middle reel), while the rest of the reels spin as normal. This might help you prolong the free spins round, and the feature really lives up to its name in our experience.
How to play
There is not anything out of the ordinary when it comes to the Viking Pays gameplay and how to play, but we will run through everything of importance here anyway. This part of the review is mostly for newbies and beginners, and not really for people who have a lot of slot experience. You can skim through it, or skip to the next part, if you’re a veteran player.
The interface is about as minimalistic as they come, and the gear icon below the spin button takes you into a set of menus. The game info section is where you find the paytable, and also a number of slides describing the bonus features and the game rules. The highest value symbol is the viking ship, and the symbol values range from 1x to 20x, including the 4 low value rune symbols.
You need to land 3 to 5 matching symbols on one of the 243 paylines from uttermost left to right in order to win in Viking Pays. You can play with turbo mode switched on, and this will increase the pace of the gameplay quite a lot. Turning on/off the sound is also possible, but you cannot just turn off the music and keep the sound effects, which is a luxury many other games come with.
You can also check out your game history, if you have played a while on the game, and choose left hand mode if you prefer that. The icon with coin stacks opens up the menu where you can select your bet size. The bet range is between 20p and £20 per spin, which might be a bit slim for high rollers.
The autoplay feature comes with between 5 and 100 autospins, and you have to set a loss limit to be able to use it. You can also set up a win limit if you want, and you need to hold down the spin button to open the autoplay menu. You can also spin the reels manually, of course, if you prefer it the old school way.

The 200 Spins Viking Pays Experience
We like how all buttons in the interface disappear on each spin, and also how non-winning symbols are faded out to highlight the remaining winning symbols when you land a winner. These are minor details perhaps, but things like this add up to improve the gaming experience.
We crossed our fingers that this would be our lucky day, and boldly maxed out the stake level with £20 per spin bets. Even though there is no official word about volatility for this game, we are pretty certain it’s high. We got more than enough dead spins and minute wins to argue that case, and you can check out the highlights in the video.
There really isn’t all that much to report from the base game here, as nothing of any significance happened in our 200 spins test session. We managed to finally trigger the Re-Life Bonus Round towards the end of our session, and this was when more interesting things started to happen.
We landed the minimum of 3 Shield-maiden scatters, and this gave us the lowest possible starting point in the multiplier ladder, namely 2x. After 2 dead spins the mighty viking warrior wild came in as the life saver it’s designed to be, and we would have been snuffed out right away if it wasn’t for his bravery.
The same thing kept happening several times, but only minor wins came from it. The 3rd time in a row it happened we won 16x our stake, which was our most significant win up to now. The good news is that the multiplier keeps building all the way, and it was up to 10x towards the end. The stacked viking wild tried its best a final time, but we got wiped out after 17 spins with a total win of 28.1x our stake in our pocket.
Viking Pays comes with decent enough visuals, and a soundtrack that sets the mood for some epic battles. The base game is not extremely exciting here, and we would have preferred at least one proper feature to break up the endless grind. Even though you can win a solid 4,860x your stake in the base game, you’re most likely gonna see a lot of dead spins and smaller wins instead. This is a very volatile game, and you need to trigger the bonus round to get the juices flowing here.
Without the life-saver stacked wild, the bonus round would many times have been over with before it even got started. This feature really is a life saver, something we proved above, but even higher value multipliers does not guarantee bigger wins from the Re-Life spins. Those times luck is on your side, the wins can climb towards the maximum of 12,500x your stake, but don’t expect it to happen very often. Also, the max win is capped at £250,000 in this game, which is something to consider.
Unlimited free spins with 3 lives and progressive multiplier
Stacked wild on the middle reel on the last-life spin
High variance and 12,500x max win potential
Max win is capped at £250,000
RTP of 95.58 % is below average
No base game bonus features

If vikings theme games are your thing, we have 155 of the sort (at the time of writing) in our catalog you can check out. Here we will briefly introduce you to some similar games to Viking Pays, and this includes 2 other games from Inspired that are essentially the same games with different themes.
Egyptian Pays - is exactly the same game as Viking Pays, but this one takes you to ancient egypt. The visuals are brighter and somewhat better in Egyptian Pays in our view, partly because of the transparent reels. All the features are the same though, and you can still win up to 12,500x your stake.
Viking Clash - is all about the sea battle between 2 rivaling viking clans, and it comes with walking wilds and a battle bonus round with sticky multiplier wilds. The volatility is a little less brutal than the game at hand, and wins up to 13,200x your stake is possible on this exciting and somewhat underrated Push Gaming title.
